Dave Annable never expected that his connection to Taylor Sheridan’s television universe would continue after his sudden exit from Yellowstone. The actor explained that he was thrilled simply to receive a call from Sheridan asking to work together again. He had enjoyed his brief experience on Yellowstone, despite the unusual circumstances surrounding his character’s death, and he had discovered how much he enjoyed stepping into the world of cowboys and ranch life. When Sheridan introduced him to Lioness and described the character of Neal McNamara, Annable immediately knew he wanted to be involved.

For him, the opportunity felt like a genuine gift. Rather than focusing on the fact that his first Sheridan character had been eliminated almost immediately, he viewed the invitation as a sign that their creative connection had remained strong. Being asked back by a creator known for having a clear vision for his projects was something Annable considered one of the greatest compliments an actor could receive.

In Lioness, Annable’s role as Neal McNamara has become far more significant than he initially imagined. Unlike Lee Dutton, who had only a brief presence in Yellowstone, Neal has developed into an important emotional anchor within the story. He is the husband of Joe, played by Zoe Saldaña, a CIA operative who leads a covert team carrying out dangerous missions that often involve life-or-death decisions.

The contrast between Neal and Joe’s worlds is one of the central elements of their relationship. Neal is a pediatric surgeon whose professional life revolves around protecting and saving lives, while Joe operates in a shadowy environment where taking lives is sometimes part of the mission. Their careers place them on opposite sides of difficult moral questions, but Annable believes their bond is built on years of trust, commitment, and mutual support.

According to Annable’s interpretation, Neal and Joe likely met before their careers fully defined them. He wondered how Neal would react in such an extreme moment — whether he would attempt to help the injured men, struggle with what his wife had done, or simply process the frightening reality that had entered his family’s life.

The scene became a major turning point because the threat was no longer something happening far away during Joe’s missions. The danger had crossed directly into their home, making the conflict personal in a way Neal could no longer avoid.

Before receiving the scripts for the new season, Annable had no idea how deeply Neal’s storyline would develop. Like many actors on Sheridan projects, he had little knowledge of where the story would go until the scripts arrived. When he finally read the first episode of the third season, he was surprised and excited by the direction of the story.

He compared the experience to being a child on Christmas morning, eager to discover what was waiting. Seeing how the events affected Joe, Neal, and their family convinced him that the upcoming season offered some of the strongest material he had been given.

Although Annable avoided revealing future details, he made it clear that he was extremely satisfied with Neal’s journey.
