A heated debate has broken out across Korean online communities after some netizens questioned whether Taemin is experiencing a decline in public relevance despite one of the busiest years of his career.

The discussion began after chart data for Taemin’s latest digital single, “Permission,” circulated online. While the song was released ahead of his highly anticipated appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, some critics pointed to its relatively modest performance on domestic streaming platforms as evidence that the veteran idol no longer commands the same attention he once did.

For many fans, however, the criticism ignores the bigger picture.

Few artists in K-pop have enjoyed the longevity and influence that Taemin has maintained since debuting with SHINee in 2008. Widely regarded as one of the defining performers of second-generation K-pop, he has built a reputation not only as a successful group member but also as one of the industry’s most respected solo artists.

Far from slowing down, 2026 has been one of the busiest years of his career.

Whether “Permission” ultimately becomes a commercial success or not, the controversy has revealed a divide in how fans define relevance. For some, chart rankings remain the ultimate benchmark. For others, an artist who is still releasing music, performing on global stages, selling concert tickets, and influencing an entire industry is far from fading away.

If anything, the debate demonstrates just how closely Taemin’s career is still being watched—something that many truly forgotten artists can no longer claim.
