Matthew McConaughey’s Yellowstone spin-off project has FINALLY RECEIVED AN UPDATE AFTER NEARLY TWO YEARS OF ALMOST “DISAPPEARING” from the fandom’s radar. In a recent interview, Cole Hauser—who plays Rip Wheeler—clarified the recent rumors surrounding McConaughey and Dutton Ranch. According to Cole Hauser, these are two completely different projects. However, what caught the fandom’s attention most was a rather unintentional remark he made during the interview. This detail led many to believe that Matthew McConaughey’s Yellowstone series has actually entered a serious behind-the-scenes development phase and is likely very close to its official broadcast date.

After years of rumors, delays, and apparent silence, Matthew McConaughey’s mysterious Yellowstone spin-off may not be dead after all.

Matthew McConaughey’s Yellowstone Spin-off Gets First Major Update in Years

The long-discussed project — once rumored to be the franchise’s major modern-day continuation following the end of Yellowstone — had seemingly disappeared entirely over the last two years. Many fans assumed the series had either been quietly canceled or transformed into another project within the growing Yellowstone universe.

Now, however, Cole Hauser has provided the biggest update fans have received in years.

And according to him, the McConaughey project was always its own separate thing.

Speaking recently with  The Playlist , Hauser addressed one of the franchise’s biggest fan theories: that the abandoned McConaughey-led series eventually evolved into Dutton Ranch, the Yellowstone follow-up starring Hauser and Kelly Reilly.

Fans had long speculated that the rumored spin-off — reportedly once titled 2024 during development — may have simply changed form behind the scenes. After all, both projects involved modern-day Yellowstone characters, and both were connected to the continuation of Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton’s storyline.

But Hauser shut that theory down directly.

“No. Dutton was a one-off to its own,” Hauser explained.

He also confirmed that he and McConaughey had discussed the project years ago privately because of their friendship, but clarified that it had no connection to Dutton Ranch creatively.

“I’m friends with Matthew, so we had a little dialogue along the way years ago, but it had nothing to do with that,” Hauser said.

Instead, Hauser described Dutton Ranch as a completely separate creative effort focused specifically on continuing the journeys of Rip and Beth while giving the actors room to explore new directions for the characters.

“How do we take these two creative beings and Kelly, me, and give us the kind of roadmap to continue to create these characters and do something special that’s new and challenging,” Hauser explained.

That clarification is hugely significant for Yellowstone fans because it means the McConaughey spin-off technically still exists independently — at least conceptually.

And for longtime followers of the franchise drama, this update immediately reignited speculation online.

The McConaughey-led sequel series originally became one of the hottest topics in Hollywood during the chaotic final years of Yellowstone production. At the time, reports suggested that franchise creator Taylor Sheridan was planning a continuation of the Yellowstone universe centered around McConaughey after tensions and scheduling conflicts involving Kevin Costner complicated the original series’ ending.

For a while, it seemed almost certain the Oscar-winning actor would officially enter the franchise.

Then everything went quiet.

Instead, Paramount shifted focus toward projects like Dutton Ranch, while the McConaughey series slowly faded from public discussion altogether. Many fans assumed the project had collapsed during development.

Hauser’s comments now suggest otherwise.

Even more interestingly, Hauser and McConaughey are still set to collaborate on another upcoming series together titled Arena, created by Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective.

According to Hauser, the series follows “two brothers who coach in college sports, in Division One,” reuniting the two actors in an entirely different genre outside the Yellowstone universe.

Meanwhile, Dutton Ranch itself has become one of the strongest-performing entries in the Yellowstone franchise so far. The series currently holds an impressive 85% critics score on Rotten Tomato and has quickly developed its own passionate fandom despite early production controversies and behind-the-scenes rumors.

Still, the possibility of McConaughey eventually leading his own Yellowstone project remains one of the franchise’s biggest unresolved questions.

And after years of silence, fans finally have a reason to believe the door may still be open.
