PART 3: A DEADLY SLIP IN THE KITCHEN
Twenty minutes before the candles were lit, the party was in full swing in the garden. Evelyn had stepped into the kitchen to prepare the cake.
That was when Mark—Sarah’s estranged, irresponsible younger brother—lurkingly slid through the back door. Deep in gambling debt and desperate for cash, Mark had come to beg his mother for money. When Evelyn refused, a bitter argument erupted in whispers.
In a fit of malice and spite, knowing how obsessed his mother was with Leo’s safety, Mark pulled a small glass vial from his jacket—a potent, concentrated liquid peanut extract he had bought online, intending to use it as a threat to ruin the party’s catering if she didn’t pay him off.
During their scuffle near the island counter, Mark dropped the open vial directly onto the un-frosted inner layer of the cake. The clear, odorless liquid soaked instantly into the sponge.
Mark panicked and fled out the side door, leaving his mother standing frozen in horror.
Evelyn knew something nobody else in that room remembered: Leo had a severe, anaphylactic class-6 peanut allergy. A single microgram of peanut protein would close his airway in less than ninety seconds. Even her emergency EpiPens couldn’t guarantee survival against an concentrated extract absorbed directly into the stomach lining.
PART 4: THE LESSON IN THE RUINS
Evelyn had rushed out to the dining room just as Sarah was placing the candles on top of the cake, unaware that the dessert had become a lethal weapon. Evelyn tried to speak, but the terror froze her throat. Seeing Leo leaning forward, his lips parted to inhale and blow out the candles—inches away from taking a bite of the contaminated frosting—Evelyn’s medical instinct took over.
Reason yielded to brute force. She did the only thing that guaranteed not a single crumb would enter the child’s mouth.
Back in the present, as the shocked guests watched in silence, Evelyn didn’t defend herself against their disgusted looks. She ignored her daughter’s tearful shouts of “What is wrong with you?!”
Instead, the old woman dropped to her knees right into the mess of frosting and broken ceramic. Ignored the sharp shards cutting into her knees, she picked up a piece of the crushed cake, her hands shaking uncontrollably, and held it up to Sarah’s face.
The chemical, pungent stench of pure peanut extract hit Sarah’s nose immediately.
Sarah’s breath hitched. Her face drained of all color as the realization crashed over her like a tidal wave.
Evelyn looked up at her daughter, tears finally streaming down her wrinkled cheeks, her voice dropping to a trembling whisper:
“Mark was here… It’s poisoned, Sarah. He tried to kill my baby.”
The room erupted into a different kind of chaos as the police were called. As Sarah pulled her mother up from the ruined floor, holding her tight amid the wreckage of the party, the guests realized that what looked like a grandmother’s mad rampage was actually the fiercest shield of a mother’s love.
