PART 4: A New Foundation
Three months later, the court proceedings concluded.
My cousin Mason pled guilty to grand larceny and notary fraud, receiving a three-year prison sentence. Teresa was convicted of elder abuse, wire fraud, and forgery, receiving five years of probation, mandatory restitution, and a permanent, legally binding restraining order barring her from ever contacting my family again.
The dark cloud that had hovered over our home finally cleared.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in late autumn, the sun shone brightly across our backyard. The noise of loud music and greedy relatives was gone, replaced by the soft rustle of autumn leaves and the sound of my son’s laughter.
Frederick, now fully recovered and walking on steady feet, chased a colorful rubber ball across the green grass.
Amy sat on the patio wooden bench, wearing the blue dress I had bought her for the birthday that had been stolen from us. The hollow look in her cheeks was gone, replaced by a radiant, healthy glow and a genuine smile.
I walked over, carrying two glasses of iced tea, and sat down beside her. I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, and she rested her head gently against my chest.
“Thank you, Connor,” she whispered softly, watching our son play in the sunlight. “For saving us.”
“We saved each other,” I replied, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “This house is finally a home.”
