Sung Yu-ri, Criticizing Current Law’s Failure to Stop Stalking Damage

Sung Yu-ri took to her personal social media on the 7th to share a detailed account of her ongoing stalking ordeal, voicing frustration over what she described as systemic failures in protecting victims.
In her statement, she revealed that a third provisional measure had been issued on the 6th following public exposure of the case and media attention. “This is already the third measure,” she wrote, pointing out that despite repeated legal actions, the perpetrator has yet to face any form of punishment. She also noted the emotional toll of the process, explaining that she was forced to file petitions and even found herself treated as a suspect at one point.
She went on to criticize the limitations of provisional measures, emphasizing that while they are designed to safeguard victims, they do not impose penalties on offenders. According to her, these measures merely offer temporary protection without addressing the root of the problem or preventing repeat offenses. “Each time the measure expires, the victim has to start over,” she explained, adding that she has had to endure this cycle three times.
Sung Yu-ri further stressed that existing laws do allow for criminal punishment if such measures are violated, including the possibility of arrest during investigations. However, she expressed disbelief that no such action had been taken, even though the perpetrator allegedly destroyed evidence and admitted wrongdoing. She also highlighted the added distress of facing a retaliatory lawsuit without seeing any legal consequences imposed on the offender.
“The law is there. The procedures are there. But they didn’t work,” she wrote, questioning what options remain for victims when the system fails them.
Previously, Sung Yu-ri had filed a complaint under the Stalking Punishment Act against an individual who had allegedly posted malicious comments targeting her since 2020. Although the case was eventually handed over to prosecutors, she pointed out that progress has been slow, once again calling for stronger and more decisive punishment.
