Morgan Kohan and Chad Michael Murray are back together in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as production moves ahead on the fifth season of the Canadian romantic drama Sullivan’s Crossing.
The pair, who play Maggie Sullivan and Cal Jones, have returned to the East Coast set after the series was officially renewed for another season earlier this year. Filming for Season 5 began in late August and is expected to continue through December 11, 2026.
Production is once again taking place across Nova Scotia, with Halifax serving as one of the show’s key filming hubs. Previous seasons have also used locations including Hubbards, Sackville, Mount Uniacke and Mi’kmaq First Nations territories to create the picturesque setting that has become closely associated with the series.
Maggie and Cal’s relationship remains at the heart of the story
Based on the novels by bestselling author Robyn Carr, who also wrote the books that inspired Netflix hit Virgin River, Sullivan’s Crossing follows neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan after she returns to her rural hometown following turmoil in her professional life.
Her return brings her into the orbit of Cal Jones, played by Murray, and their developing romance has become one of the central storylines of the series.
His appearance created another major obstacle for Maggie and Cal, although the storyline was largely resolved by the end of the fourth season.
That finale then delivered another major development when Cal asked Maggie to marry him.
The proposal left viewers with a significant question heading into Season 5: will Maggie say yes?
Murray had previously made his feelings about the romantic complication clear, joking that his preference for the new season was simply: “No Liam!”
A new showrunner takes charge
Season 5 will also bring an important change behind the scenes.
Floyd Kane has taken over as showrunner from Roma Roth, marking a new creative chapter for the series as it continues the stories of Maggie, Cal and the wider community surrounding Sullivan’s Crossing.
Kohan and Murray are joined by a substantial ensemble that includes Tom Jackson, Andrea Menard, Amalia Williamson, Lindura, Dakota Taylor, Reid Price, Glenn Gould, Fuad Ahmed, Jonathan Silverman, Colby Frost, Emerson MacNeil, Cindy Sampson, Steve Lund, Jayne Eastwood and Meghan Ory.
Production set to continue through December
According to current production listings, Sullivan’s Crossing Season 5 is in principal photography in Nova Scotia, with approximately 75 shooting days planned.
Filming began in late August following preparation work that started in July, confirming that production is now well underway.
For viewers who have followed Maggie and Cal’s complicated romance, the return of Kohan and Murray to set signals that answers to Season 4’s cliffhanger are getting closer.
With Liam’s storyline apparently moving out of the way and Cal’s proposal hanging over the new episodes, Season 5 looks set to focus once again on the future of the show’s central couple — while introducing a new era behind the scenes under Kane’s leadership.
