Luke Grimes has revealed that he personally reached out to longtime Yellowstone costar Kelsey Asbille after learning that the new spinoff Marshals would move forward without her character, Monica Dutton.

The CBS drama, which premiered on March 1, 2026, brought Grimes back as Kayce Dutton but delivered an immediate shock for viewers: Monica, Kayce’s wife and one of Yellowstone’s central characters, had died before the events of the new series.

For Grimes, the storyline was not simply a major development for Kayce. It also meant saying goodbye to an onscreen partnership that had lasted throughout Yellowstone’s run.

Grimes Says He Was Devastated by the Decision

Grimes, 42, said he found the idea of continuing Kayce’s story without Asbille difficult to process.

The two actors spent years portraying one of the franchise’s most enduring couples, and Grimes has described Asbille as one of his closest friends as well as one of his favorite collaborators.

He said the prospect of returning to Kayce without Monica initially felt almost impossible because the two characters had been so closely connected for so long.

The situation also left him with an uncomfortable personal task.

Before committing fully to the new chapter, Grimes decided he needed to speak directly with Asbille about what the series planned to do with Monica.

He admitted he had to summon the nerve to make the call because he did not know how she would respond.

He Called Asbille to Check on Her

According to Grimes, the conversation ultimately went far better than he had feared.

He said he wanted to make sure Asbille was all right with the direction of the new series and understood what was happening with the character they had portrayed together for years.

Grimes later described the conversation as positive and said Asbille handled the news professionally and with understanding.

Asbille, 34, had not been announced as part of the Marshals cast before the premiere, which had already prompted speculation among fans about Monica’s fate.

Her absence from trailers and promotional material only intensified those questions.

The premiere eventually confirmed the explanation in unmistakable fashion.

‘Marshals’ Reveals Monica Died of Cancer

In the opening episode, viewers learn that Monica died sometime after the conclusion of Yellowstone.

Kayce is shown mourning his wife, while both he and their son Tate, played by Brecken Merrill, are still living with the emotional consequences of her death.

The series later establishes that Monica died from cancer connected to environmental contamination affecting the Broken Rock reservation.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut said the creative team wanted Monica’s death to connect with a broader issue involving toxins and health problems affecting Indigenous communities rather than use her death purely as a dramatic device.

The storyline also gives Kayce a radically different emotional starting point than the one he had at the end of Yellowstone.

Why Monica Was Written Out

The original series concluded with Kayce finally appearing to reach a measure of peace.

After the collapse of the Dutton family’s control over the Yellowstone ranch, Kayce sold most of the land back to Chief Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock community.

He, Monica and Tate were then able to begin a quieter life away from the burden that had defined much of the series.

That ending created a creative problem for Marshals.

Hudnut has explained that Kayce’s life had to be disrupted in order to create a believable reason for him to leave the ranch and enter a dangerous new profession.

There was also a practical factor behind the decision.

Hudnut later revealed that Asbille was not available to participate in the new series. He stressed that killing Monica was not something he and Grimes had initially set out to do; instead, the writers had to determine how to move forward once Asbille’s participation was no longer an option.

The creative team ultimately decided that Monica’s death could become the emotional engine driving Kayce into his next chapter.

Grief Reshapes Kayce’s Character

In Marshals, Kayce is no longer the man viewers last saw peacefully rebuilding his life.

He is grieving, emotionally unstable and trying to raise Tate without Monica.

That loss becomes one of the central forces behind his decision to work with an elite U.S. Marshals unit.

Grimes has said the tragedy gave the character a reason to become unpredictable again.

He eventually came to believe that the storyline, while painful, created compelling dramatic possibilities because someone suffering that level of grief could behave in ways even he does not fully understand.

The result allows Marshals to preserve important elements of Kayce’s past — his military training, instinct for danger and willingness to protect others — while moving him into a different world.

Kayce and Tate’s Relationship Also Changes

Monica’s absence does not only affect Kayce.

It fundamentally alters his relationship with Tate.

During Yellowstone, Kayce often saw himself as the protector of the family while Monica carried much of the emotional responsibility of parenting.

Without her, Kayce has to learn how to fill a role he never believed came naturally to him.

Hudnut has described the early episodes as partly a reversal of the traditional parent-child relationship, with Tate sometimes forcing his father to confront the reality of their loss.

That emotional dynamic becomes one of the bridges connecting Marshals to Yellowstone.

Although the ranch is no longer the center of Kayce’s life, his responsibility to his son remains central.

Fans Were Shocked by Monica’s Fate

The decision to kill Monica offscreen sparked a strong reaction from viewers.

Many longtime Yellowstone fans had watched Kayce and Monica endure years of trauma, including violence, family conflict and personal loss, only to finally reach what appeared to be a peaceful ending in the 2024 series finale.

Some viewers therefore saw Monica’s death as undoing that conclusion almost immediately.

The reaction was intensified by the fact that Asbille had played Monica throughout all five seasons of Yellowstone.

Still, the producers have maintained that the decision was meant to be respectful to the character and necessary to establish a meaningful new story for Kayce.

Hudnut has also left open the possibility that Asbille could potentially appear in the future through a flashback, dream or other storytelling device, although no return has been guaranteed.

Grimes Was Initially Unsure About Doing a Spinoff

Even before learning Monica’s fate, Grimes was hesitant about returning as Kayce.

He has explained that the ending of Yellowstone gave his character something close to the life he had always wanted.

Kayce was free from much of the Dutton family conflict, living with Monica and Tate and no longer carrying responsibility for the massive family ranch.

That made Grimes question what another series could realistically add.

A show in which Kayce simply continued living happily would offer little dramatic tension.

Grimes has said the eventual premise presented to him changed his mind because it gave Kayce a believable reason to re-enter a dangerous world.

A New Life Beyond the Yellowstone Ranch

Marshals follows Kayce as he uses the skills he developed as a former Navy SEAL to work alongside a U.S. Marshals team in Montana.

The series brings back several familiar faces from the Yellowstone universe, including Tate as well as Gil Birmingham’s Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty’s Mo.

At the same time, it introduces new characters and shifts the franchise toward a law-enforcement format.

That allows Kayce to remain recognizably connected to the world audiences already know while placing him in situations that do not depend on the Dutton ranch.

The new story is therefore built around two competing forces: Kayce’s desire to protect the family he still has and the danger he continues to attract.

Grimes and Asbille’s Friendship Outlasts Their Onscreen Story

For Grimes, however, Monica’s death also marks the end of an important professional partnership.

He and Asbille worked together from the beginning of Yellowstone in 2018 through its conclusion in 2024.

Over those years, Kayce and Monica’s relationship survived repeated crises and became one of the emotional anchors of the series.

That history helps explain why Grimes felt personally responsible for reaching out once he learned what Marshals had planned.

His call to Asbille was not simply about informing a former colleague of a plot twist.

It reflected the friendship that developed while the two actors spent years telling Kayce and Monica’s story together.

And while Monica may no longer be physically present in Marshals, her absence is central to almost everything Kayce becomes in the new series.

Rather than leaving the character behind entirely, the spinoff has turned Monica’s memory into one of the defining forces shaping Kayce’s future.
