Dutton Ranch season 2 is facing serious trouble right from the start — and the rumors are getting louder by the day.
Filming for the new episodes was originally supposed to begin in February 2027, but the writers room has been fully operational since at least August 2026. And according to a fresh report from the Daily Mail, behind-the-scenes tension is already reaching a breaking point.
An insider close to the production claims there is “high drama on that one, so much tension.” They added that the actors themselves are a major part of the problem. “Too many people think they are in control over there and that’s causing a lot of issues.”
The report highlights two major flashpoints that have reportedly created friction:
- Ed Harris (who plays Captain Lee Dutton) is reportedly “pissed off” about his limited screen time in season 2, and sources say he has been vocal about it in private conversations.
- Annette Bening’s “star power” has also reportedly led to tension on set. The veteran actress, who is returning as Beth Dutton’s mother-in-law, is known for her commanding presence — and insiders say some cast members have pushed back against what they see as her attempt to take over creative control.
Despite these problems, one positive development has emerged: Taylor Sheridan is set to have a “bigger presence” in the writers room for Dutton Ranch season 2. This is music to fans like me who have been pushing for Sheridan to step fully into the showrunner role for years.
While Sheridan will remain an executive producer, the announcement that Benjamin Cavell will serve as the primary showrunner has opened up a whole new set of concerns.
Cavell is best known for his work on military and action-heavy series like Homeland, SEAL Team, and Justified. He also wrote the miniseries The Stand for Paramount+, which proves he can handle big-scale streaming content. But he doesn’t have the deep Western experience that Chad Feehan (the previous showrunner for Lawmen: Bass Reeves) brought to the table.
For fans who fell in love with Dutton Ranch’s slow-burn ranch life, family drama, and the unique blend of modern Texas politics and old-fashioned ranch wars, introducing a complete newcomer as showrunner at this late stage feels like a risky move.
The good news? Sheridan’s increased involvement could help stabilize things. After years of rumors that Sheridan would eventually take the full showrunner title (just like he did with Yellowstone and 1883), this feels like the closest thing we’ve seen to what many of us hoped for.
But the leaks keep coming. Reports of actors fighting for control, creative clashes, and general unease in the writers room don’t exactly inspire confidence.
Even while we don’t know how much of the drama is true, the fact that these stories are circulating at all is concerning. Dutton Ranch was supposed to be a fresh start for the Dutton family in Texas — a new chapter after the chaos of season 1. Instead, it’s already looking like another production headache in the long history of Sheridan-verse problems.
I’m still holding out hope. I fell head over heels for Dutton Ranch and want this spinoff to succeed. But with filming months away and already-toxic rumors leaking out, the tension is starting to feel very real.
