Marshals season 2 is nearly here, and the Yellowstone spinoff will not look exactly the same when it returns. Maddie Calvin Steps Into a Bigger Role

The most significant change for returning viewers involves Morgan Lindholm, who plays Maddie, the daughter of Pete “Cal” Calvin. According to Deadline, Maddie is being positioned for a larger role in season 2. That upgrade follows a season 1 arc defined by distance and tentative repair. For much of the first run, Maddie and Cal’s relationship was estranged. Only in the latter half of the season did she call him “dad” for the first time—a small word that carried heavy weight after episodes of strain.

Lindholm responded to the casting news herself on Instagram on August 12. “Well… looks like Maddie’s sticking around,” she wrote, adding a beer-mug emoji. “I’m so excited to be back for Season 2 of @marshalscbs. I’m filled with so much gratitude. Thank you @deadline for the announcement and a big welcome to Marque Richardson. See you this October!”

Her promotion suggests the writers intend to spend more time on the personal cost of Cal’s work—and on whether the fragile progress between father and daughter can survive whatever season 2 throws at them.

A New Face in the Prosecutor’s Office

The series is also adding Marque Richardson in the recurring role of Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns. A federal prosecutor embedded more deeply in the marshals’ cases raises the legal and political stakes around Kayce’s team. Burns’s presence could complicate investigations, force sharper choices about evidence and procedure, or create friction between street-level enforcement and the demands of the courtroom. Deadline’s report does not spell out Burns’s allegiance or agenda; the character’s introduction alone signals that season 2 will not treat the justice system as a silent backdrop.

The Cloud Hanging Over Cal

Any expansion of Maddie’s role sits against the unresolved danger surrounding her father. The May 2026 finale left Cal and his romantic interest, Isabel “Belle” Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), in a life-threatening situation after an attack. Earlier in the season, Cal had also been diagnosed with cancer. Season 2 therefore opens with at least two overlapping crises for the character: immediate physical peril and a longer fight with illness—while his daughter, now more central to the story, watches from a relationship that has only just begun to heal.

That combination gives Lindholm’s expanded part clear dramatic fuel. Maddie is no longer only a symbol of what Cal has neglected; she is positioned to become an active participant in whatever comes next for him.

At the center of the series remains Kayce Dutton, still defining himself outside Montana and the ranch that shaped him. Marshals has used Texas and the U.S. Marshals Service to test whether a man formed by the Dutton world’s violence and loyalty can operate inside a federal badge and a different code. Season 1 established the job, the team and the personal wreckage trailing several of its members. Season 2, with a larger role for Maddie and a new AUSA in the mix, looks ready to tighten the pressure on both the cases and the people solving them.

Official marketing has stayed relatively quiet, which is typical for a network drama protecting spoilers. The casting news nevertheless offers a clear map of emphasis: more time with the Calvin family story, a new recurring force from the prosecutor’s office, and the lingering question of whether Cal survives the attack that closed season 1—and the diagnosis that has been hanging over him since earlier episodes.

For a spinoff that had to prove it was more than a Yellowstone epilogue, these moves suggest confidence. The show is not only bringing Kayce back for another cycle of fugitive hunts. It is investing in the supporting lives that make those hunts matter—and putting a young woman who only recently learned how to say “dad” at the heart of what happens next.
