Directed by action heavyweight Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), the film tells the tragic, gripping true story of four of America’s most famous college football heroes who sacrificed fame, fortune, and glory to join the US Marines right after the devastations of Pearl Harbor.
Swapping the vibrant gridiron for a nightmare landscape of flying bullets and blinding smoke, the four leading men endured an uncompromisingly raw production that pushed them to their absolute limits.
NO STUNT DOUBLES
Beside Nosferatu star Skarsgård and Red, White & Royal Blue actor Galitzine, the star-studded squad features rising icons Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis.
And forget CGI trickery—director Berg threw his handsome leading men straight into the deep end without stunt doubles, exposing them to real fire and devastating explosions just inches from their faces!
Galitzine revealed the terrifying intensity of life on set, admitting: “The way Peter Berg wanted to make this movie means we’ve done pretty much everything ourselves with limited use of stunt doubles.”
“Explosions going off a couple feet from our faces, trees on fire, flames actually catching on us at points—the sounds of war right up close,” the actor added.
FROM STADIUMLIGHTS TO HELL ON EARTH
Adapted from Buzz Bissinger’s gritty bestseller The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the true story follows four gridiron legends: John McLaughry (Galitzine), Bob Baumann (Skarsgård), Tony Butkovich (Nicholson), and David Schreiner (Francis).
At the height of their college football dominance, the talented icons walked away from sports royalty after the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor plunged America into World War II.
Joining the elite US Marines, the brothers-in-arms were thrown into the brutal, muddy horrors of the Pacific campaign.
Before heading off to the bloody invasion of Okinawa, the men staged a legendary, improvised football game dubbed “The Mosquito Bowl”—a fierce match played on a dirt field by military heroes, many of whom were playing the very last game of their lives.
REAL LIFE HEROES
Director Peter Berg made sure the production honoured the immense sacrifice made by the brave real-life soldiers.
“This is very much a reality-based film,” Berg explained. “We are representing forces larger than ourselves — honoring the men of the Marine Corps who sacrificed their lives in 1944 and 1945.”
Co-star Ray Nicholson echoed the sentiment, revealing the emotional weight the cast felt every day on set: “These were real people. You work as hard as you can and believe in something bigger than yourself.”
With its fiery action, breathtaking realism, and emotional punch, Netflix’s first look images have already left film fans stunned.
