Cole Hauser has always been proud to play Rip Wheeler — but when he sat down for an interview with Fox News Digital, he went even further, describing the character as a true “throwback to the old-school American man.”
The actor, who first appeared as Rip in Yellowstone Season 1 and has now reprised the role in the new Paramount+ spin-off Dutton Ranch, revealed that the role was always meant to embody something deeper than just a tough foreman.
“I mean, there’s pieces,” Hauser said when asked how much of Rip reflects who he is in real life. “You know, obviously I don’t kill people, which is a good thing. But, you know, I think what Taylor and I originally wanted to create is kind of a throwback to the old-school American man. And I think Rip is that. He’s extremely loyal. He’s honest. He has great honor. He loves, he fights. I mean, he is the epitome of a Montana man.”

A Role He Didn’t See Coming
Hauser’s connection to the role runs far deeper than most people realize. In fact, he wasn’t supposed to play Rip at all.
His team had pushed him to audition for one of the Dutton sons, but when he read the script, he instantly saw the character of Rip Wheeler as the only role that felt right.
“I looked at the script and I think initially, my team wanted me to position myself to play one of the sons,” Hauser said. “And I just didn’t see it at all.”
The rest, as they say, is television history. Rip Wheeler became one of the most beloved and complex characters in the entire Yellowstone universe, and Cole Hauser’s performance has only made him more iconic.
The Montana Roots That Make Rip Feel Real
Hauser has long been connected to Montana — his family has been there since 1886. His great-great-grandfather, Samuel T. Hauser, was the seventh governor of Montana, and the actor has always felt a deep sense of belonging.
“When we go back there, it feels like a homecoming for me,” he said. “Montana, my family has been there since 1886. So the Hauser legacy there is huge.”
That personal connection is exactly what makes Rip Wheeler feel so authentic. The character isn’t just a rugged ranch hand — he’s a man shaped by loyalty, honor, and the kind of quiet strength that only comes from a deep connection to the land and the people who live there.

A New Chapter in Texas
With Dutton Ranch premiering on May 15, 2026, audiences will see Rip and Beth Dutton leave Montana behind and build a new life in Texas. The move comes with fresh challenges — new threats, new characters, and a completely different environment.
But for Hauser, what matters most is that Beth and Rip remain the same polarizing, strong, and loyal couple audiences have come to love.
“What stayed consistent is Beth and Rip,” he said. “Kelly and I were very cognizant of making sure that those two characters continue to be the same polarizing, strong, loyal characters that they’ve always been.”
Why Rip Wheeler Feels So Special
Cole Hauser has said that the role of Rip Wheeler has always felt deeply personal. The character embodies the kind of old-school American masculinity that feels both timeless and very much of the moment.

He’s not perfect. He’s not always easy to like. But he’s loyal, honest, honorable, and willing to fight for what he believes in. And in a television landscape full of moral gray areas and antiheroes, Rip Wheeler stands apart as a true throwback — the kind of man who still believes in doing what’s right, even when it’s difficult.
That’s why so many fans around the world have fallen in love with Rip Wheeler. He’s not just a character on a screen. He’s the kind of man they wish existed — someone who is fiercely loyal, quietly strong, and unapologetically himself.
And Cole Hauser has made sure that the world never forgets it.
