PART 3: The Breach
BOOM!
The heavy double doors at the back of the parlor didn’t just open—they exploded inward as tactical breaching charges blew the hinges off the frame.
“STATE POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!”
A squad of heavily armored SWAT officers surged into the room, their assault rifles raised, green laser sights instantly painting Richard’s chest and forehead. Behind them stepped Detective Sarah Miller, her badge flashing in the dim light, her weapon drawn and locked onto Richard.
Richard spun around in utter shock, his eyes darting from the laser dots on his suit to the heavily armed tactical team filling the aisle. “How—how did you get here?!”
“Your ‘private funeral director’ wasn’t as quiet as you paid him to be, Hale,” Detective Miller called out, advancing with steady, deliberate steps. “When a rogue medical examiner flagged a forged death certificate linked to your offshore wire transfers an hour ago, we tracked your location. We’ve been surrounding this estate for the last five minutes.”
“Back off!” Richard screamed, grabbing Ethan by his shoulder and pulling the boy in front of him as a human shield, pressing the hot barrel of the pistol against Ethan’s temple. “Back off or I blow his brains out! I’ll do it! I have nothing left to lose!”
The room held its breath. The SWAT officers held their fire, waiting for a clean shot. Ethan stood frozen, feeling the cold steel pressed against his skin, but he didn’t cry. He looked down at Richard’s foot—dressed in a polished Italian leather shoe—standing right next to his own.
Ethan stomped his heavy school boot down with all his force directly onto Richard’s big toe, driving his heel into the leather.
“AGH!” Richard shrieked in sudden, agonizing pain, his posture breaking for a fraction of a second as his grip on Ethan loosened.
BANG!
A single, suppressed rifle shot echoed from a police sniper stationed on the balcony above. The high-caliber round struck Richard’s right wrist with absolute precision. His gun shattered into pieces, blood spraying across the carpet as Richard let out a guttural scream of agony and fell to his knees, clutching his ruined hand.
Before he could even hit the floor, three SWAT officers tackled him, slamming his face into the hardwood floor, pulling his arms behind his back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Ethan didn’t spend a single second looking at his bleeding stepfather. He turned back to the white coffin, grabbing the cracked wooden lid with both hands.
“Help me! Somebody help me get her out!” Ethan sobbed.
Detective Miller and two tactical officers rushed forward. Using heavy crowbars from their tactical kits, they jammed the steel edges into the crack Ethan had made with his hammer and pulled with massive force.
CRACK!
The top half of the white wooden lid ripped away completely, exposing the dark, velvet-lined interior.
Inside lay Claire Parker. Her hands were bound behind her back with heavy industrial zip-ties, her ankles strapped together, and her mouth covered with thick, silver duct tape. Her face was pale, soaked in sweat, and tears were pouring down her cheeks as her wide, terrified eyes locked onto her son.
“Mom!” Ethan cried out, reaching into the box.
Detective Miller quickly used tactical shears to slice through the zip-ties while Ethan gently, carefully peeled the silver tape away from his mother’s lips.
Claire gasped, drawing in a massive, ragged lungful of fresh air, coughing as her lungs expanded. “Ethan… oh God, Ethan!”
She sat up frantically, pulling her twelve-year-old son into a fierce, desperate, crushing embrace. She buried her face in his neck, weeping hysterically as her body shook with uncontrollable sobs. “I thought I was going to die in the dark… I heard you… I heard your hammer…”
“I knew you weren’t dead, Mom,” Ethan sobbed, wrapping his arms around her waist, holding her as if he would never let go. “I knew it.”
