PART 3: The Trap Unravels
Four armed state troopers tackled Victor Vance to the marble floor before he could touch the brass handles of the courtroom doors.
The courtroom descended into absolute, roaring chaos. Reporters were shouting into their lapel microphones, jurors were standing up in disbelief, and spectators cheered as the heavy handcuffs snapped around the lead investigator’s wrists.
“Get him off me! You don’t know what you’re doing!” Victor screamed, thrashing against the floorboards as troopers pinned his arms behind his back.
Judge Vance slammed his gavel repeatedly. “ORDER! ORDER IN THIS COURT OR I WILL HAVE THE MARSHALS CLEAR THE GALLERY!”
When relative quiet returned, Sarah Lin stepped directly in front of the judge’s bench, holding a secondary printout of financial records that had been blocked by the prosecution weeks earlier.
“Your Honor,” Sarah Lin declared, her voice trembling with righteous anger, “in light of this indisputable video evidence, the defense moves for an immediate dismissal of all charges against Daniel Carter with prejudice!”
Prosecutor Marcus Sterling looked like a man who had been struck by lightning. He looked at the monitor displaying the crisp image of his star witness planting the bomb, then at the trembling six-year-old girl hugging her mother in the center aisle.
“The… the State…” Sterling stammered, his voice pitching high as he swallowed his pride in front of thirty national news cameras, “…the State joins the motion for dismissal. We withdraw all charges.”
“Motion granted!” Judge Vance declared, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “Daniel Carter, you are a free man. Unchain him immediately!”
Daniel didn’t wait for the court clerk to unlock the wooden gate separating the tables. He vaulted over the railing, throwing his arms around his wife and lifting six-year-old Lily into his chest. He collapsed to his knees right there in the middle aisle, sobbing uncontrollably into his daughter’s neck.
“You saved me, baby… you saved my life,” Daniel wept, pressing his face against Lily’s tiny shoulder as Emily wrapped her arms around them both.
“I kept the camera safe in my backpack, Daddy,” Lily whimpered softly, wiping his tears with her small thumb. “I knew you were coming home.”
