Following the huge success of its debut season, Dutton Ranch is preparing to enter a new chapter, with major changes behind the scenes already creating excitement among fans. The Paramount+ series has officially welcomed a new showrunner, Ben Cavell, whose arrival has raised questions about the future direction of the popular Yellowstone spinoff. While viewers wait to see what changes may come, star Cole Hauser has offered some insight into the challenges of the first season, the intense production process, and the conversations he has already had with the new creative leader about what lies ahead.

Hauser, who returns as fan-favorite character Rip Wheeler, recently opened up about the exhausting journey of bringing the first season of Dutton Ranch to life. According to the actor, the biggest challenge was not one specific emotional moment or difficult scene, but rather the relentless conditions the cast and crew faced during the lengthy production.
The actor explained that after nearly nine months of filming, everyone involved in the project was completely drained. The demanding schedule, combined with unpredictable weather conditions, pushed the team physically and mentally. Hauser revealed that the production experienced dramatic shifts in temperature, moving from extreme Texas heat to freezing cold conditions and even dangerous ice storms.
“It was just nuts,” Hauser shared, describing the unpredictable environment that surrounded the making of the series. The constant weather changes created additional difficulties for everyone working on set, making an already challenging production even more demanding.
By the time filming finally concluded, the cast and crew were eager for some time to recover. Hauser admitted that everyone reached the end of the season feeling exhausted and ready to step away for a while before beginning the next phase of the show.
Despite the hardships, the actor emphasized that the difficult experience ultimately made the final result more rewarding. He believes the dedication and effort from the entire team helped create a season that connected strongly with both audiences and critics. For Hauser, the positive response proved that all the struggles behind the scenes were worth it.
The extreme filming conditions were not a surprise to those involved with the production. Hauser and director Christina Alexandra Voros had previously discussed the unusual weather challenges during the premiere event for the series. The actor explained that maintaining the physical appearance required for Rip Wheeler was especially difficult because of the conditions.

Hauser traditionally prepares for the role by gaining significant weight, as Rip’s powerful presence is an important part of the character. However, the intense heat made that process much harder. He explained that he was constantly losing weight while filming because of the physically demanding environment and the long days spent outdoors.
Voros also described the production as a true test of endurance. She recalled that filming began during a period of extreme heat, with temperatures reaching around 106 degrees during the opening week. However, by the time the team reached the final stages of production months later, they faced the complete opposite situation when an ice storm forced the production to shut down for several days.
According to Voros, the cast and crew experienced nearly every type of weather condition imaginable throughout the filming process. Although the circumstances were difficult, she praised the dedication and determination of everyone involved in completing the season.
Now that the first season is complete, Hauser is looking forward to taking some time away before returning to work on future episodes. After such an intense production experience, the actor says he plans to enjoy a period of rest while focusing on other projects and personal commitments.
The break comes as Paramount+ has already confirmed that Dutton Ranch will continue with a second season. While details about the upcoming storyline remain closely guarded, Hauser has teased that fans can expect an exciting new direction with Ben Cavell stepping into the role of showrunner.
When asked whether viewers would see a different side of Rip Wheeler in the next season, Hauser suggested that there are still many layers of the character waiting to be explored. However, he remained careful not to reveal specific story details.
The actor expressed confidence in Cavell’s vision and revealed that they have already had private discussions about the future of the series. Hauser described the new showrunner as someone special and believes his leadership will help guide Dutton Ranch into an exciting new era.

He also made it clear that the future is not only promising for his own character but also for Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, Carter, portrayed by Finn Little, and the entire series as a whole. According to Hauser, the upcoming season represents a meaningful next step for the franchise.
With the combination of a passionate cast, a new creative voice, and a dedicated production team, expectations for season 2 are already growing. Although fans will have to wait for more details about the storyline, Hauser’s comments suggest that the next chapter of Dutton Ranch will bring fresh developments while continuing the emotional storytelling that made the first season successful.
Production on season 2 is expected to begin in early 2027, giving the team time to prepare for another ambitious chapter. As audiences continue streaming the first season on Paramount+, anticipation is building for what Ben Cavell and the returning cast will deliver next.
