A popular Japanese girl group is facing growing backlash after one of its social media accounts appeared to share a post containing a hashtag calling for BTS to disband.
f5ve, the Japanese girl group that debuted in 2022, has built a dedicated following through its distinctive music, visual identity, and highly active social media presence. The group has particularly gained attention for its creative use of platforms such as X, TikTok, and Instagram.

But that social media strategy has now landed the group in controversy.
On August 18, fans noticed that f5ve’s official TikTok account had reposted a video containing the hashtag #btsdisband. The repost quickly caught the attention of BTS fans, with ARMYs criticizing the group over what appeared to be a direct reference to BTS.

The situation became even more complicated as the discussion spread across social media.
Some fans questioned whether the repost was intentional, while others argued that the account may have shared the content without fully considering the meaning or context of the hashtag. However, because the post came from an official group account, the incident quickly became much bigger than an ordinary social media mistake.
BTS fans began leaving comments criticizing f5ve, with some also bringing up other controversies involving BTS and their recent activities. In particular, some online discussions attempted to connect the backlash to the ongoing controversy surrounding interactions between BTS members RM and J-Hope and Chris Brown.
As the criticism intensified, f5ve eventually removed the repost.
However, removing the post did not end the controversy.
Another post from the group’s social media account was subsequently interpreted by some users as a response to the criticism. Although the group did not explicitly explain that the post was connected to the BTS controversy, the timing led to even more speculation among fans.
Instead of calming down, the online reaction became increasingly hostile.
What began with criticism over a repost quickly escalated into personal attacks against the members themselves, including comments targeting their appearances. The tone of the discussion has therefore shifted from questioning the social media activity to directing increasingly malicious comments at individual members.
That escalation has prompted concern from others online, particularly because there is still no confirmed explanation from f5ve regarding why the original post was shared.
For BTS fans, the central issue remains the use of the #btsdisband hashtag on an account officially associated with another professional music group. For f5ve supporters, meanwhile, the lack of clarification has left room for speculation over whether the repost was intentional, accidental, or simply part of the group’s social media strategy.
The incident also highlights the risks artists face when using highly active social media accounts. A single repost can reach millions of people within hours, and content that may appear insignificant to one audience can carry an entirely different meaning to another.
For now, f5ve has removed the controversial repost but has not issued a direct statement addressing the situation.
As the backlash continues, fans are waiting to see whether the group or its management will finally explain what happened — and whether that explanation will be enough to stop a controversy that has already gone far beyond a single social media post.
